The English Room: e-Learning
Project at Sriwittayapaknam School, Thailand.
Contrary
to popular myth, Sriwittayapaknam School is a normal Thai
private school situated in Samut Prakan Province about 35 kms
sout h of Bangkok. Due to the fact
that our students produce many award-winning web sites in English
most people think that we are an international school or at the
very least a school that teachers all subjects in English. But
we are no different to all the other private and government schools
around Thailand. The only difference is that we have a very large
and active Computer Department.
The
Computer Center has over 150 computers in three large
computer rooms and a dozen or so in the kindergarten classrooms.
Two rooms have Apple Macintosh computers and the Internet Center
has PC computers. All 50 computers in the latter room are connected
to the internet. Unlike other schools, we have enough computers
for each student to have their own. Every student from the age
of three learn Computer Studies at least once a week. Primary
5 and 6 students have an additional lesson in the Computer Center
as part of our e-Learning project. During this lesson they either
work on their personal homepages or use the English Room. Students
can also connect to the internet to send and receive e-mail from
penfriends around the world. Junior High students have Computer
Studies twice a week and they come into the Computer Center for
an e-Learning lesson much the same as the Primary 5 and 6 students.
The only difference is that they receive and submit their homework
by e-mail.
Every
month our students sit an English exam which tests their
vocabulary and grammar. To help them achieve a better score we
devised The English Room which the students can use during
special English lessons in the Computer Center, during lunch
breaks and on the internet in their own homes. This is part of
our continuing e-Learning project. We were the first primary
school in Thailand to use the internet to teach English.
All
English games and quizzes in The English Room have been
created here at Sriwittayapaknam School. Although The English
Room has been designed for our own students, other people around
Thailand are welcome to use the web site. Over the past year,
some universities and commercial companies in Thailand have started
to offer e-Learning. However, the difference between us and them
is that we do not charge any fees for people to use our site.
We believe that the country will benefit greatly if the next
generation are more proficient in the English language. The English
Room is free for anyone to use.
Sriwittayapaknam
School has been active on the internet since 1997. Over 400
of our students are working on personal homepages about themselves
at this very moment. They also correspond by e-mail with other
students all around the world and take part in electronic cultural
exchanges. Some of our students have made award winning web sites
such as ThailandLife.com,
LenGame.com
and LenFree.com
which receive thousands of visitors from around the world every
day.
We
often receive visitors at Sriwittayapaknam School. Whether
